Today Virginia became the 42nd state to go live with Employers Edge on UI SIDES. This is an exciting development for our Virginia customers as participating in UI SIDES as it eliminates the initial claim mail processing time, affording our customers more lead time to gather separation details at the initial claim level. All UI SIDES claims from Virginia will come with a questionnaire to determine whether the claimant worked for the employer for at least 30 days. This questionnaire is used for determining employer chargeability. In Virginia, any employer (even a base period employer) for which the claimant worked less than 30 days, is not chargeable for unemployment benefits paid to that claimant.
According to a press release from the Virginia Employment Commission dated 4/15/16, the Virginia unemployment rate had fallen to a historic low of 4.0% at the end of the first quarter. That is a full percentage point lower than the national average at that time and is the lowest rate of unemployment in the state of Virginia since June, 2008.
